Arepera Du Plateau.

There's nothing better than to enjoy delicious food... Unless, you get to enjoy it with some of your favorite people! I always thought I was quite a cultured foodie until I realized I didn't know much about latin american cuisine after all. The extent of my knowledge of Latin food consisted of: Mexican (tacos, cochinita pibil, mole, chilaquiles), Cuban (cuban sandwiches & grilled corn with cortija cheese), Salvadorian (my fave: pupusas!), Peruvian (ceviche) and other classics such as churros, tres leches cake and tamales. Well, tonight proved that I still have so much to learn about Central & South American specialties.

Thanks to two out-of-this-world-funny Venezuelan ladies, Lissy & Jojo, I got to discover another latin staple: the arepa. Similar to my beloved Salvadorian pupusas, arepas are also made of ground maize dough. However, instead of being stuffed and seared, the Venezuelan arepa is flatten, crisped, split and then used to make decadent sandwiches.

The Arepera Du Plateau, on Duluth street in Montreal, offers some of the best arepas in town thanks to the variety of stuffing and garnishes. Try yours with slow cooked pulled beef & string cheese, roasted chicken and avocado or sweet plantain with white queso (always with a splash of guasacaca (avocado salsa) and chilli sauce).  There's something for everyone. If you're lucky enough, not only will you be served by the friendly staff of Arepera Du Plateau, but you may also get to clap and sing along with the live musicians (if you speak spanish that is!). For $30, I was able to share an appetizer of yuca chips, sip on a fresh juice, eat one big arepa served with a side watercress salad and order a vegan arepa + salad for the hubby.
